Description

The goal of the Arts Residency Interventions in Special Education (ARISE) Project is to help "at-risk" youth in San Francisco, CA develop creative expression, critical thinking, and basic learning through the arts.

All teaching artists receive training on the Cycle of Artistic Inquiry, a teaching method that prepares them to help youth gain the most from the experience. During "residency", an artist goes to a classroom (Artists-in-Schools) or a non-school setting (Artists-in-Communities) once or twice a week for a minimum of 10 weeks and a maximum of 30 weeks. Artists work with site staff to set learning goals that go beyond technical training in a particular art form.

The goal of the Arts Residency Interventions in Special Education (ARISE) Project is to help youth develop creative expression, critical thinking, and basic learning through the arts.

Results / Accomplishments

Eighty-three percent of the teachers that partnered with the ARISE Project noticed improvements in student learning due to the arts integrated lessons. In the 2009-2010 school year, over 7,000 students participated in the program.
