Real AIDS Prevention Project (RAPP)

Description

The goal of the Real AIDS Prevention Project (RAPP) is to help women and their partners decrease their risk for HIV infection. RAPP has two phases: 1) community assessment and 2) community involvement. The goal of the community assessment is to find out more about the environment in which program participants live and for program leaders to understand the risks for HIV infection particular to that setting. The risk reduction activities are targeted and directed toward the population based on the findings in the community assessment.

During project implementation, peer networkers and community outreach staff have one-on-one discussions with women about safer sex decisions. The material for these discussions is based on each woman's stage of readiness to change, and stories about safe sex told by members of the community who are role model are printed and distributed.

The goal of the Real AIDS Prevention Project is to help women and their partners reduce their risk for HIV infection.

Impact

Community-level interventions may be an effective way to reach large numbers of women and change their condom-use behaviors, particularly their behaviors with regard to communication with main sex partners.

Results / Accomplishments

Compared to the control communities, women in the intervention communities attempted to get their partner to use a condom 11% more often, a difference significant at the p=0.01 level. Also, there was a 13% greater decrease in the intervention community than the control community among women who said they never talk with their main partner about condoms (p=0.03).
