More than a half million Americans do not have a place to call home each night, and half of them are without shelter. Corporation for Supportive Housing (CSH) was established in 1991 - with funding from the Pew Charitable Trusts, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the Ford Foundation - to support the individual efforts of local nonprofit pioneers developing service-supported housing for those most in need.

CSH, whose goal is to help people coping with homelessness and extreme poverty, as well as chronic health conditions such as mental illness, addiction or HIV/AIDS, advances its mission by providing advocacy, expertise, leadership, and financial resources to make it easier to create and operate supportive housing. Specifically, CSH provides high-quality advice and development expertise, gives out loans and grants to supportive housing sponsors, strengthens the existing supportive housing industry, and reforms public policy to make it easier to create and operate supportive housing.

CSH has offices in ten states (California, Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, and Rhode Island) and in Washington, DC, and provides assistance to many other communities.

Goal / Mission

Corporation for Supportive Housing's mission is to help communities create permanent housing with services to prevent and end homelessness.

Results / Accomplishments

CSH's lending, grant making and project-specific assistance resulted in the development of over 152,600 new units of supportive housing. These accomplishments are correlated with a decrease of approximately 45,000 cases of long-term homelessness since 2006.
