This indicator shows the age-adjusted death rate per 100,000 population due to chronic liver disease and cirrhosis. Chronic liver disease includes alcoholic liver disease and chronic hepatitis.
Why is this important?
Chronic liver disease includes a variety of conditions where there is gradual destruction of liver tissue over time. Cirrhosis is often the result of chronic liver disease where scar tissue replaces functioning tissue, leading to liver failure and the need for transplantation. The common causes of chronic liver disease are excessive alcohol consumption and viral hepatitis. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, chronic liver disease and cirrhosis are in the top 15 leading causes of death in the United States.
The Healthy People 2030 national health target is to reduce cirrhosis deaths to 10.9 deaths per 100,000 population.
